Peter Wehling, MD, PhD
Peter Wehling has laid the scientific basis for regenerative pain therapies and has translated his research into meaningful clinical applications. He has published numerous research papers in international specialist journals and has authored the book “The End of Pain” telling the story around his approach.
Furthermore, Dr. Wehling is founder and CEO of biotech-company Orthogen AG, where he and his team continuously research, improve and develop clinical applications for musculoskeletal diseases as well as pathologies beyond the orthopedic spectrum.
Trained as a spine surgeon, Dr. Wehling has been interested in the non-mechanical effects and solutions in orthopedics and spine diseases from the very beginning of his residency. While treating patients suffering from disc prolapses, Dr. Wehling observed that magnitude of mechanical compression on the nerve did not correlate with experienced pain intensity.
He observed that some patients with former herniated disc still experienced the same radiating pain after the herniation had been removed surgically. How can pain still be present even though the mechanical problem has been solved? The answer to this are the inflammatory and immunological components which remain after surgery in those patients, as Dr. Wehling discovered.
Soon after, Dr. Wehling demonstrated that inflammatory molecules placed at a nerve root resulted in radiating pain without any mechanical compression. He soon began to realize that the text-books were partially wrong to ascribe back pain to a ruptured disc pressing against a nerve. Instead, he formulated a new biological paradigm placing inflammation at the heart of the problem.
His belief in biochemical and biomolecular importance has driven Dr. Wehling’s research and clinical application ever since.

Gisela received her medical degree in Ukraine and initially worked as an internal specialist. She runs the laboratory processes as well as associated quality assurance. Her interests in science and medicine revolve around general human aging.

Jana is an expert in the field of autologous and regenerative medicine and consults the clinic of Peter Wehling. She is currently completing her residency at a musculoskeletal center in Gladbach, Germany. Jana is a former resident of Dr. Wehling & Partner.
